Industrial Training versus Hospital Attachment. (Part 1)
Hi. *waving awkwardly*
As the title says, I found it to be a lingering issue in the mind of some of my friends who are currently in their first semester of final year. Which should be done first in your final semester of B.Pharm?
Bear in mind, the final semester is the crucial part because that is the time to see where you are actually standing. As for me, the way I look at myself at that time - whether I am competent enough to be a pharmacist in my final year of study and which field I should encourage my tiny self in.
Basically, the very last semester of IIUM B.Pharm consisted of two parts; the industrial training worth 6 weeks of pharmaceutical industry working exposure and the clinical exposure in 6 weeks of interesting but hectic hospital attachment. The batch will be divided into two large groups and later, the subgroups will be formed for each subject.
Let me spill a bit of my experience during my time.
HOSPITAL ATTACHMENT TIPS & TRICKS
1. Be very familiar with clinical terms, formulae, basic of diseases, and at least classes of drugs.
2. Practice good working attitude. Be punctual (or early), speak nicely, submission on the dot, do the homework.
3. Be detailed, precise and understand every of your cases.
4. Share everything you got with the others, it will help you to remember better.
5. Complete the diary every day. Avoid procrastination (sebab menipu dalam diary tu malaikat catat. So it's up to you)
6. READ THE CPG BY HEART!
7. Manage time wisely. Especially the pending RP, the unsettled report, programs, hipster cafe food hunting or whatever will always override you. Still, live the weekend to the fullest!
8. Prepare report and presentation template - this will save your time and make your documents standard and consistent.
9. Try make a good rapport with patient. Collect every data in an organized manner, take note of the time of the tests, address them accordingly. (Who knows if you're interviewing a Dato')
10. Don't be afraid of complicated cases but be variety in choosing cases. Don't be lazy that you just copy and paste the same management in the cases.
p/s: admit your mistakes and apologize. Rely only on yourself because your friends are equipped with their own business. Let go of the fragile heart. Common la lecturer/pharmacist jerit sikit tu, kami pun biasa lepas present lari pergi surau and nangis. huhu
INDUSTRIAL TRAINING PEARLS AND PITFALLS
1. Don't take everything happened during this 6 weeks attachment for granted.
2. Collect the untold experiences and knowledge from the staffs and lecturer. Be good to staffs, they know more.
3. Always be ready for viva. (Allah.. I failed one. RA. blergh)
4. Referring to the 4th point; during this attachment, tidak salah untuk BERHATI KERING. You'll find out why. Kahkah.
5. Complete the tasks and assignments given on that same day if possible. (Delaying the task will result in sleepless night)
6. Lunch hour - there's no 10am break. Tidurlah sepuasnya!
7. This time, the pearls of working in pharmaceutical industry will be revealed. To me, it is somewhat fascinating. Just enjoy everything including failed experiments during R&D department period.
8. You can golek2 watching Kdrama / series at night unlike the nights during hospital attachment.
9. Groupwork, unlike hospital. Leasure learning, no sore calf and palpitations due to unexpected questions from specialist or preceptors. There's so much time that you can also search for AGD outfits, completing love letters and lunch outside before the next shift starts.
10. The sneak peek of every industrial departments (plus the execs) involved will be forwarded to you when the time comes. Read it and weep.
So, these are 20 things that I can share. I'm sure my batch mates also have their own version and better experiences.
Take what's good and don't repeat the bad. Be open and happy collecting memories, final year zombies!
